Learning outcome
The students will:
- Focus on instruction, learning and training in various types of sports and be able to discuss which values should be stressed in the school’s teaching of sports in physical education classes.
- Be able to demonstrate skills and coach in a variety of indoor and outdoor sports; both individual and team sports.
Course Description
16 ECTS credits, 1st year of study, one-year study programme
Sport-related activities in the first year of study will mainly focus on teaching in primary/lower secondary schools. A main aim is that students will be given fundamental instruction in a selection of sports:
- Team sports: ball sports, soccer, volleyball and floorball
- Individual sports: orienteering, gymnastics, track and field, swimming, skating and cross-country skiing
- For students in third year of the General Teacher Education study programme, the following applies (due to the Bachelor’s thesis): An individual sport equivalent to 1 ECTS credit will be taken out.
Through this introduction, students will seek to achieve the goals of the study programme so that they will be able to:
- Compare the similarities and differences of the various sports activities, and practice the value aims of sports in physical education classes.
- Demonstrate skills and the ability to teach selected sports activities.
- Create positive environments for gaining the required skills in various sports.
- Develop game variations and different types of training based on the knowledge they have gained while working with different sports.
- Create alternative sport activities through experimentation and interaction with others.
- Implement safety routines in the specific environments, and be skilled in life-saving and CPR.
9 ECTS credits, 2nd year
In the 2nd year target area, emphasis will be given to three sport disciplines (individual and team): climbing, snowboarding and table tennis. The focus will be on basic training with a view to working in primary and secondary schools.
20 ECTS credits, 3rd year – sport and adapted learning
In the 3rd year target area, emphasis will be given to an individual sport, alpine skiing, two team sports, handball and basketball, and sports for the disabled. There will be a focus on basic instruction with a view to working in primary and secondary schools. In addition, adapted teaching will be included as a subject didactics’ theme.
The topic, “adapted teaching”, constitutes the largest part of the 3rd year target area; and emphasis will be given to theoretical knowledge, practical experience and didactic reflection. Three main areas will be focused on:
- Adapted teaching within the framework of the National Curriculum
- Adapted teaching for pupils who need an individual subject syllabus
- Adapted teaching for the physically disabled and mentally disabled
Assessment Methods
16 ECTS credits, 1st year / one-year study programme
The grade will be based on continuous assessment in selected sports. The basis of assessment will be the student’s own skills, effort and progress and knowledge in each sport. The final grade in the target area sports is based on grades from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years of study. The grade will be determined when the mandatory requirements have been completed and received passing marks.
Mandatory requirements:
- Passing marks in each sport
- At least 80% participation
- Completed theoretical and / or practical-methodical assignments with passing marks
A single overall grade will be entered on the diploma, graded from A to F, where A is the highest and E the lowest passing grade. Each course unit must receive a passing mark in order to achieve a passing mark for the major course unit. Please refer to the Telemark University College Examination Regulations.
9 ECTS credits, 2nd year
The target area is a continuation of the work completed in the first year of study. The grade will be based on continuous assessment in selected sports. The basis of assessment will be the student’s own skills, effort and progress and knowledge in each sport. The final grade in the target area sports is based on grades from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years of study. The grade will be determined when the mandatory requirements have been completed and received passing marks.
- Passing marks in each sport
- Completed theoretical and / or practical-methodical assignments with passing marks
A single overall grade will be entered on the diploma, graded from A to F, where A is the highest and E the lowest passing grade. The final grade in each target are is based on the grades from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years of study. 20 ECTS credits, 3rd year – sports and adapted learning
The target area is a continuation of the work completed in the first and second years of study. The assessment in the third year consists of a single grade. The grade will be based on continuous assessment in selected sports. The basis of assessment will be the student’s own skills, effort and progress and knowledge in each sport. All the grades in the respective sports count equally and the final grade in the 3rd year represents an average. Assignments are included in the work on adapted learning. The grade will be determined when the mandatory requirements have been completed and received passing marks.
