Sociology of Sport II 1042
Course Description
The course examines and discusses the following six concepts: Identity, socialisation, institutionalisation, power, gender and globalisation. All these concepts will be related to observations and analyses within the field of sport and outdoor activities. Each of these six concept are contested within social sciences. They are also interrelated and we intend to examine how interpretations of one concept may provide input to the analysis and uses of the other concepts. We intend to demonstrate how different approaches and perspectives tend to influence the interpretations of empirical data.
Assessment Methods
Two group essays (2000 words per group member), one in each term plus an individual oral exam towards the end of the second term. Of these, the group exams count 25% each while the oral exam count 50%. Each exam will be evaluated from A-F. Ahead of submitting the group essays, each group must give an oral presentation of their work in progress, from which they will also get feedback and comments from the lecturer/supervisor. Supervision is group based. In the essays the students are expected to discuss and highlight some of the six concepts which the course rests upon. Each essay is conditioned by the reading and working with curricular and other relevant texts, in addition to discussions of exxamples taken from either the field of sport, administration and management or the field of sports coaching.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
