Learning outcome

After completing the course, the students should have the following qualifications regarding knowledge, skills, and general competence:

  • be familiar with many different applications of genetic engineering
  • specialized insights in specific methods used in the field
  • knowledge of ethical implications
  • can use relevant methods in a manner that is required in a DNA lab.
  • be able to apply techniques for extraction of DNA from various sources, saliva, blood, hair, tissue
  • be able to optimize PCR reactions
  • mastering primer design
  • can carry out limited research projects under supervision for detection of various genetic differences
  • planning to carry out tasks in line with ethical guidelines
  • be able to convey specific topics in writing

Course Description

Key theme:

· extraction of DNA

· measurement of DNA concentration and purity

· PCR setup and optimization

· primer design

· detection of genetic variation using RFLP, microsatellites and AD-assay

· sequencing

· Real-time PCR

Assessment Methods

Laboratory reports will constitute 40% and a final written examination (3 hours) represent 60% of the final grade.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
