Students will gain knowledge of:
The use of various natural environments from a cultural-historical perspective
Outdoor life as a cultural phenomenon
Outdoor life’s history, growth, development, diversity and scope
Outdoor life as a tool in nation-building and in creating national identity
Outdoor life in relation to gender, class and social divisions
The significance of outdoor life in Norwegian society: values, motives and goals
The changing aspects of outdoor life: institutionalisation, commercialisation, pedagogisation
Outdoor life policies, right of access, laws and regulations, public documents and guidelines
Public management locally and nationally: levels and departments
Main problem areas within management of outdoor life and various types of physical environments: conflicts and challenges
Key NGOs within the field of outdoor life
Skills
Students will be able to:
Explain the key trends in the history of outdoor life
Explain the central features of outdoor life as a cultural phenomenon
Explain how Norwegian outdoor life management is organized
Recognize and identify types of landscapes, flora and fauna associated with different habitats
Recognize places of cultural heritage in different environments
Be able to write an academic text
General competence
Understanding and knowledge of Norwegian outdoor life as a cultural phenomenon, including its history, its place and importance in society, as well as its management.

- Cultural history
- The theory of nature
- Outdoor life’s history, growth and development, nation-building and national identity
- Outdoor life today, its diversity and scope; gender, class and social divisions; changes underway
- The importance of outdoor life in Norwegian society: values, motives and objectives
- Outdoor life policies, right of access, legislation, public documents and guidelines
- Public administration locally and nationally
- Problem areas in the management of outdoor life and a variety of natural environments
- Voluntary organizations
Teaching and Learning Methods
16 lectures
4 days of field trips
2 days of seminars
Assessment Methods
3-day graded written examination. Grades will be given on a five-point scale from A to E (passing marks) and F (failing mark).
The type of assessment is chosen to test the student’s knowledge; please refer to the points under “Learning outcomes” above.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
