Learning outcome
Students will be able to produce idiomatic and structured texts, reflect on relevant tools and gain awareness concerning the need to use various means of presenting information and different styles, depending on the topic and audience. He/she will also be able to critically analyse literary texts, and use the appropriate terminology.
Course Description
A satisfactory competence in English requires the ability to produce long and coherent texts on a wide variety of subjects. This course will emphasise practical training in authoring well-formulated texts in varied contexts, with particular emphasis on literary essays.
Teaching and Learning Methods
Instruction (two hours per week) combines lectures, seminars and workshops. The main part of the actual writing will be done separately from the teaching, which will primarily focus on theory, discussions and feedback on completed, submitted work or ongoing work. An attendance rate of at least 75% is required.
Assessment Methods
The assessment in this course is based on three assignments. The first assignment will not receive a lettered grade, but must receive a passing grade; students who are given a ‘fail’ on this assignment will be given the opportunity to re-submit their work. The second assignment counts for 40%, and the third for 60% of the total course grade; it is not possible to re-submit these assignments. The last two assignments will be graded on a scale from A to F, where E is the lowest passing grade. All work must be submitted before deadlines that will be set at the beginning of the semester; students must obtain a passing grade on all assignments in order to receive a final passing grade in the course. The attendance reqirement of 75 per cent in the lectures must also be met.
