Learning outcome

Knowledge

The candidate can:

  • Explain how symptoms, examinations and medical treatment affect acute and critically ill patients’ basic needs, physical capacity and ability to cope
  • Explain how the organizational and functional framework and priorities of the practical training institution (the institution where the student carries out his/her practical training) affects the nursing services offered by the institution
  • Identify the nurse’s responsibilities and functions in pediatric nursing and in maternity wards

Skills

The candidate can:

  • Observe and evaluate acutely ill patients’ health and self-care capacity and their ability to meet their own basic needs and cope with their situation
  • Integrate the knowledge of the study programme courses in assessing patients’ needs and when defining goals for nursing, in planning, prioritization, implementation, documentation and evaluation of the nursing of acutely ill patients
  • Prepare and observe patients during medical examinations and treatment and take appropriate nursing actions
  • Prevent complications and morbidity, identify worsening conditions, consider when a doctor should be called and delegate tasks when necessary
  • Carry out nursing care for dying patients and their families
  • Interact appropriately with families of acutely ill and dying patients
  • Inform, guide and teach acutely ill patients and their families
  • Master the basic and advanced nursing skills and be able to use common medical equipment with accuracy, attention and dexterity
  • Administer medications, injections, infusions and nutrition accurately, correctly and responsibly and report on the efficacy and side effects of drugs

General competence

The candidate can:

  • Follow ethical guidelines, applicable laws and regulations
  • Argue for appropriate actions in ethical dilemmas
  • Participate in professional and interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside the specialist health services
  • Carry out a nurse’s administrative tasks for a small group of patients
  • Plan, assess and communicate his/her own learning processes and outcomes

Course Description

Clinical studies - 8 weeks - medical ward including observation studies at a maternity ward, and in pediatric nursing - focusing on the integration of knowledge, skills and attitudes related to:

  • The patient
  • The nurse
  • Interaction
  • Context

Teaching and Learning Methods

8 weeks of clinical studies; demonstration - practice - guidance - reflection

Assessment Methods

Clinical studies, 8 weeks in the specialist health services - medical wards - graded pass / fail.

The student must first have passed the preceding course in clinical studies in order to take the course that follows.
