Learning outcome

Knowledge

The candidate can:

  • Explain the most common disorders, symptoms, examinations and surgical treatment and how they affects the basic needs, capacity and ability to cope of patients at the institution where the student carries out his/her practical training
  • Explain how the organizational and functional framework and health policy priorities of the department affect nursing services

Skills

The candidate can:

  • Observe and assess the patient’s health condition, emotional reactions and his/her self-care ability to fulfil his/her basic needs and cope with his/her situation in a pre-, per-and postoperative context
  • Integrate the knowledge of the study programme courses when identifying goals for nursing, planning, prioritization, implementation, documentation and evaluation of the nursing of surgical patients
  • Prepare patients for surgery
  • Prevent complications and morbidity, identify worsening of conditions, consider when a doctor should be called and delegate tasks when necessary
  • Carry out nursing care for the dying patient and his/her family
  • Interact appropriately with the acutely ill patient’s relatives
  • Inform, guide and teach patients before and after surgery
  • Master the basic and advanced nursing skills and be able to use common medical equipment with accuracy, attention and dexterity
  • Administer medications, injections, infusions and nutrition accurately, correctly and responsibly and report on the efficacy and side effects of drugs
  • Implement and monitor prescribed medical examinations and treatment
  • Carry out a nurse’s administrative tasks for a small group of patients

General competence

The candidate can:

  • Follow professional ethical guidelines, applicable laws, regulations and procedures
  • Argue for appropriate choices in ethical dilemmas
  • Participate in professional and interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside the specialist health services
  • Analyze and communicate his/her own learning processes and outcomes

Course Description

Clinical studies - 8 weeks - surgery with focus on integration of knowledge, skills and attitudes related to:

  • The patient
  • The nurse
  • Interaction
  • Context

Teaching and Learning Methods

8 weeks of clinical studies; demonstration - practice - guidance - reflection and study visits in the outpatient department, operation and monitoring wards.

Assessment Methods

Clinical studies, 8 weeks in specialist health services - surgical wards - assessed on a pass / fail basis.

The student must first have passed the preceding course in clinical studies in order to take the course that follows.
