Learning outcome

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The candidate can:

  • Clarify development of relevant topics at national and international levels based on medical research
  • Interpret knowledge in international health and first aid
  • Clarify concepts about culture and health in a global perspective
  • Identify the relationships between governments and health policy and politics

Skills

The candidate can:

  • Discuss the position of minorities in the Norwegian health and welfare system
  • Embrace awareness of cross-cultural issues in nursing

General competence

The candidate can:

  • Clarify theories and models in nursing from a transcultural perspective
  • Identify global professional issues in nursing
  • Appreciate an international approach to nursing

Course Description

  • The nursing profession in international health aid
  • Nursing performance in a multi-cultural context
  • Government forms
  • Concepts of culture and health from an international perspective
  • Epidemiological issues
  • First aid
  • Human rights – basic human needs – minorities
  • Transcultural nursing - research and performance, nationally as well as internationally
  • The roles of nurses in international health aid
  • International organizations and unions for nurses

Teaching and Learning Methods

Subject literature and textbooks - digital studies - lectures - group work and Clinical Skills Centre.

This course may be included in professional education programmes for incoming and outgoing exchange students.

Assessment Methods

Individual essay. Pass/fail.
