Staging and Communication – Picture Book and Oral Narratives ISCENE

Learning outcome

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The candidate has knowledge of:

  • The modern picture book as a genre, and how it reflects society
  • Staging and dramatic arts
  • Reception aesthetics
  • The importance of narrating fairy tales to children
  • Narrative structure and dramaturgy.

Skills

The candidate:

  • Can develop their individual narrative style
  • Is skilled in the dramatic arts and play
  • Can plan and implement activities that enhance children’s literacy
  • Can rearticulate and communicate factual knowledge through practical work with narratives
  • Can, through various strategies, present the modern picture book for children.

General competence

The candidate:

  • Has an awareness of, and evaluative attitude towards, work with picture books in the kindergarten
  • Has the ability to reflect on their own and others’ communication skills
  • Can discuss and work with children using literature’s various forms of expression
  • Is aware of the importance of the work with literature and teaching literature to children
  • Has an understanding of how culture for children can stimulate a child’s thoughts, ideas and experiences.

Course Description

This specialization course consists of two main areas.

In the first area, ‘Picture book’, the student will gain knowledge of genres and reception aesthetics. The course will focus on picture books from a social perspective, the teaching of literature, and dramatization. Evaluation of picture books will also be emphasized.

The second main area is ‘Oral narratives’. The student will study structure, patterns and dramaturgy. Storytelling techniques will be examined along with staging and the dramatic arts.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Teaching and learning methods will vary and be adapted to the different topics within the specialization course. The course will consist of lectures, practical exercises, group work and discussions. To enhance student understanding of the kindergarten teacher’s role, several exercises will be carried out during the period of practical training.

Workshop days and study-days are mandatory.

Assessment Methods

Coursework requirements

The semester plan provides information concerning the coursework requirements. These must receive passing marks in order to gain a passing mark for the course.

  • Group oral examination, weighted 40%
  • Individual written examination, weighted 60%

A single letter grade (A to F) will be entered on the diploma, where A represents the highest and E the lowest passing grade. Each element of the course must be completed with a passing mark in order for the student to achieve a passing mark in the course. The course is subject to minor changes.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
