Learning outcome

Knowledge

  • The students will get an introduction to the Norwegian language; vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar/language structure

Skills

Listening

  • Be able to understand familiar words and very basic phrases concerning personal life; family and immediate concrete surroundings when people speak slowly and clearly.
  • Be able to understand the highest frequency vocabulary related to areas of most immediate personal relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local area, employment).
  • Be able to catch the main point in short, clear, simple messages and announcements.

Speaking

  • Be able to use simple phrases and sentences to describe where I live and people I know. I can use a series of phrases and sentences to describe in simple terms my family and other people, living conditions, my educational background and my present or most recent job.
  • Be able to communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities.
  • Be able to ask simple questions and give simple answers.
  • To some extent be able to express opinions.
  • Be able to express politeness
  • Pronunciation should not prevent understanding

Writing

  • Be able to write short, simple texts related to daily life and to some extent express opinions.
  • Know basic grammar and language rules in order to write sentences and simple coherent texts.

Competence

  • The students should be able to use the Norwegian Language, orally and written, on a basic level.

Course Description

The course provides an introduction to Norwegian grammar and pronunciation. Practical exercises in oral comprehension and the use of Norwegian in daily life are emphasised. The course is highly recommended to students who desire a unique insight into the patterns of communication in Norway and who plan to travel independently in Norway.

Teaching and Learning Methods

4 hrs/week, fall or spring semester (course is offered on a rotational basis)

Lectures, discussion, essay writing, reading and discussing literature and newspaper articles, group work, impromptu-presentations, individual study, laboratory exercises. Norwegian is the course language. Attendance is mandatory.

Assessment Methods

Weekly homework assignments: pass/fail; two semester tests count for 50 %; final written exam counts for 50%. All the assessed elements must receive passing marks in order to receive a passing grade for the course.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
