Learning outcome

Knowledge

  • Students should develop their competence in the Norwegian language; vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar/language structure and get familiar with Norway and the Norwegian society.

Skills

Listening

  • Be able to understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
  • Be able to understand the main point of many radio or TV programs on current affairs or topics of personal or professional interest when the delivery is relatively slow and clear.

Reading

  • I can understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency every day or study/job-related language.
  • I can understand the description of events, feelings and wishes in personal letters.

Speaking

  • Be able to deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where Norwegian is spoken.
  • I can enter unprepared into conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events).
  • Be able to shortly explain and give reasons for opinions and plans.
  • Be able to tell a story or retell the plot in a book or film and describe my reactions and opinions.

Writing

  • Be able to write simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest and be able to write personal letters describing experiences and impressions.

Competence

  • Be able to understand the main points in clear, standard text and speech about familiar topics regarding school, work, and leisure.
  • Be able to produce simple, coherent (oral and written) texts about various topics and explain and give reasons for opinions and plans
  • Have some knowledge about Norway and Norwegian society.

Course Description

This intermediate language course is aimed at students with a basic knowledge of the Norwegian language. The course develops the students’ basic knowledge of Norwegian grammar and pronunciation and their oral and written comprehension. It will also stimulate natural and spontaneous conversation. Students will expand their vocabulary and develop their language structures while exploring the local community culture. Conversation and composition topics will relate to present-day Norway, historical events and current issues discussed in the media.

Teaching and Learning Methods

4 hrs/week, fall or spring semester (course is offered on a rotational basis)

Lectures, discussion, essay writing, reading and discussing literature and newspaper articles, group work, impromptu-presentations, individual study, laboratory exercises. Norwegian is the course language.Attendance is mandatory.

Assessment Methods

Weekly homework assignments, pass/fail; two semester tests counting 40 % and a final written/oral examination counting 60%. All of the assessed elements must receive passing marks in order to pass the course.
