Introduction to Linux - online study 6100N

Learning outcome

After completing the course the student should have the following learning outcomes in terms of knowledge, skills and general knowledge:

  • know the structure of Linux, its propagation and uses
  • master the key commands in text-based Linux
  • know basic shell programming
  • knowledge of basic open-source applications for Linux
  • perform installation, configuration and operation of Linux workstation
  • perform installation of software under Linux
  • master file and user management

Course Description

The history and of Linux. Linux distributions.
Terminal window, Linux commands, options and arguments. Shell programming.
Configuration by editing system files, services and settings.
Important applications. Linux in a network. Practical use of Linux.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Online study, with no requirement for participation at scheduled times. Students are expected to put down 8-10 hours of work per. weeks. Students must have access to computer equipment as specified in the study program. Digital learning resources will be published online, and students are free to use the material for study when they want to. Guidance and problem solving will by done by e-mail, in online discussion groups and online meetings.

Assessment Methods

Compulsory assignments must be approved before students will be allowed to sit the individual, written 4-hour final examination.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
