Course Description
This course covers theoretical and practical aspects of work to promote local development. It introduces students to different perspectives on culture and local development, as well as on culture and sustainable development. Students are introduced to cultural planning, understood as the uses of cultural resources as a component of municipal and local place-based development strategies. Cultural resources are here interpreted as ranging from cultural monuments, local traditions, fine art, entertainment, recreation, media- and culture-based enterprises, sport, and tourism to architecture and landscape. While the course centres mainly on knowledge drawn from local communities and municipalities in Norway, we will also consider some examples from other countries (through study trips when possible). Comparation between different learning contexts is an added value of the course when possible.
Teaching and Learning Methods
Lectures, seminars and group work, e-learning.
Assessment Methods
Written individual term paper with assessment mid-term (based on oral presentation with peer review).
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
