Learning outcome

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The candidate has knowledge of:

  • A selection of works within the field of visual culture
  • Key concepts and approaches in the field of visual culture
  • Changes with respect to understanding visual expression
  • The importance of visual culture in contemporary society, and how social life, identities and experiences are made ​​apparent through visual media
  • How visualization is linked to power relations and social structures in society

Skills

The candidate:

  • Has skills in interpreting and disseminating visual culture to different audiences
  • Can orient himself/herself in the various practices and meanings of the concept of visual culture

General competence

The candidate can:

  • Reflect on his/her own role as observer and creator of visual culture

Course Description

This course addresses the societal significance of visual culture, which is interpreted in a broad sense to include fine art, photography, film, advertising and so on. We will reflect on and debate the dissemination of visual materials in various media. The course will cover multidisciplinary theoretical and critical perspectives linked to different understandings of visual materials and of the relationship between the viewer and the viewed, and will also investigate how these understandings are socially constructed.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Lectures, group work and lectures, group discussions and film screenings.

Assessment Methods

Individual written examination without invigilation, which is graded A- F, where F represents a failing grade.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
