- The historical background of today’s musical genres’ landscape
- Impulses and exchanges between different music genres

- Give an account of the processes that underlie the genre exchange
- Identify characteristics of various genres and genre conventions

The candidate can:
- Demonstrate an understanding of genres
- Disseminate examples of the genre exchanges, orally and in writing in the form of, for example, program reviews, previews, presentations
Course Description
This course introduces students to various musical genres and their histories, with a particular emphasis on folk music, blues, jazz, pop and classical music. The course also examines the relationships between different genres, as well as between ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture, and the societal assumptions that underlie the relationships between contemporary musical genres. In addition to the reading list, students are also expected to listen to a list of key works that are intended to illustrate crossovers between different genres.
Teaching and Learning Methods
Lectures, case-based teaching, multimedia teaching methods, seminars and group work.
Assessment Methods
Oral presentation of examples of the genre exchange in groups or plenary. Grade: pass / fail. Written individual work without invigilation, based on a chosen case in the form of a program review of about two pages. Graded A-F, where F represents a failing grade.
