Learning outcome
After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.
Knowledge:
The candidate has knowledge of:
- Communication processes and the characteristics of good communication
- Language as a tool for good communication
- Grammar, syntax; linguistic, stylistic and graphical tools in English and Norwegian
Skills:
The candidate is able to:
- Differentiate between written and oral forms of expression
- Use language as a tool to communicate orally and in writing in various genres, in both English and Norwegian
- Structure material for written and oral presentations
- Communicate with English-speaking professional environments, in writing and orally
General competence:
The candidate is:
- Linguistically aware of how he/she expresses himself/herself in different contexts
- Aware of the importance of good communication in professional life
- Able to acquire knowledge and information through various channels
The requirements concerning knowledge and skills in grammar, syntax and vocabulary will be higher for Norwegian than English.
Course Description
The purpose of the course is to develop students’ ability to communicate well, orally and in writing, with professionals in different disciplines, cultures and at all levels in Norwegian and English.
The main topics are data collection and collaboration; language and communication processes; and written presentations, focusing on technical reports and business correspondence with an emphasis on formality, ethics, style and analysis of target groups. Training in oral presentations is an important part of the course.
Teaching and Learning Methods
- Lectures in large groups
- Exercises in groups and individually
Assessment Methods
Continuous assessment 40%
- A written assignment in Norwegian
- A written assignment in English (job application with CV)
- An oral presentation in English
Final examination 60 %
- Two written individual examinations in English and Norwegian on seperate days
The final examinations must be passed in order to pass the course.
The course will be given a final individual grade (A-F).
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
