Construction Theory II BY3312
Learning outcome
After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.
Knowledge
The candidate:
- Is familiar with concrete’s components and inner structure
- Is familiar with the properties of concrete
- Has a basic knowledge enabling him/her to determine the load effect for the most common structures
- Has an understanding of the interaction between concrete and reinforcement in non-tensioned reinforced concrete
- Has an understanding of the theoretical basis for the design of concrete elements with regard to moment, shear and axial forces
- Understands the basis for and the theory behind the calculation and control of deflection and crack-width of beams and plates
Skills
The candidate:
- Has knowledge of the main principles in concrete work (formwork, reinforcement and concrete work)
- Can select concrete with regard to durability class for casting in a given environment/exposure class
- Can determine when a formwork should be removed
- Is able to design the common structural elements of non-tensioned reinforced concrete according to NS-EN 1992 (Eurocode 2) Part 1-1, General Rules and Regulations for Buildings
- Is able to calculate and control the deflection and crack-width of beams and plates in relation to the above standard
General competence
The candidate:
- Is able to acquire new knowledge from subject literature and laboratory experiments
- Is able to compile and evaluate subject literature and communicate the content in writing
- Is able to design simple structures and buildings using non-tensioned reinforced concrete
- Can check a completed design for load-bearing capacity
