Learning outcome

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

General chemistry

The candidate will:

  • Understand the properties of elements based on their position in the periodic table
  • Understand basic chemical concepts and principles
  • Have knowledge of the naming process for inorganic compounds
  • Have a basic understanding of the classification of organic compounds
  • Bear safety issues in mind when working with chemicals, chemical regulations, substance records, labelling regulations, REACH and safety data sheets

Organic chemistry

The candidate will:

  • Have an overview of structure and bonding in organic molecules
  • Have an overview of primary functional organic groups and their physical and chemical properties
  • Have an overview of the basic reaction mechanisms in organic chemistry
  • Be able to name organic molecules
  • Have basic knowledge of laws and regulations concerning chemical use

Skills

General chemistry:

The candidate:

  • Has a basic understanding of relevant concepts and formulas
  • Can account for basic phenomena in chemistry and apply them to explain problems
  • Can perform simple calculations (molar mass, concentrations, pH, pOH, equilibrium concentrations, etc.) based on chemical principles
  • Can name inorganic substances on the basis of molecular formula and vice versa

Organic chemistry

  • Has a basic understanding of relevant concepts and formulas
  • Can name organic substances on the basis of molecular or structural formula and vice versa using IUPAC-, CA- and common names
  • Has knowledge about molecular properties like polarity and bonding energies, and apply this knowledge for explanation of physical properties and reactivity related to functional groups
  • Can account for the main reaction types, and apply them in describing reactivity and products from relevant reagents on a basic level

General competence

The candidate:

  • Is able to communicate and discuss with other professionals in the field

Course Description

General Chemistry

  • The structure of atoms, orbital theory and the periodic table, Lewis’ structure, electronegativity, chemical bonding
  • The concept of the mole, chemical equations, stoichiometry, oxidation and reduction concepts, nomenclature
  • Solutions, concentration targets, gas laws, homogeneous & heterogeneous chemical equilibrium, acids and bases

Organic chemistry

  • Organic bonding theory: Bonding polarity, formal charge, resonance, sigma- and pi-bonds, structural isomerism
  • Naming rules for organic molecules
  • Physical properties (boiling point, polarity, solubility, acidness) for classes of organic compounds (functional groups)
  • Functional groups: Alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aromatics, alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, organic acids, amines.
  • The main reactions of the functional groups
  • General reaction mechanisms such as substitution, elimination and addition mechanisms, radical mechanism
  • Examples on how organic molecules and reactions relate to everyday products and phenomena

Assessment Methods

Each assessment will test the extent to which the individual has achieved learning outcomes in terms of knowledge and skills. The assessment consists of:

Final examination General Chemistry (50%).

Underway examination Organic Chemistry (20%).

Final examination Organic Chemistry (30%).

Passing grades must be achieved in all examinations in order to receive a passing grade for the course. Students must also submit obligatory assignments in the general chemistry component. All obligatory assignments must have received passing grades before students will be allowed to sit the examination in general chemistry.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
