Machine Parts MA3012
Learning outcome
After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.
Knowledge
The candidate can:
- Explain the principles governing the strength calculation of machine parts
- Explain the principles governing the dimensioning of weld, screw, key, pressure and shrink joints
- Provide a description of shafts, bearing and belt transmissions
- Explain the calculation principles for fatigue
Skills
The candidate can:
- Carry out an analysis of a mechanical problem and evaluate the results
- Design simple mechanical structures
- Work in teams on the planning and execution of mechanical projects
General competence
The candidate:
- Has knowledge of the relevant literature on the subject of mechanical calculations
- Bears safety considerations in mind when carrying out calculations
Course Description
The course covers the most common techniques used for calculating mechanical problems. It provides an introduction to how to dimension and calculate mechanical problems. The main topics are dimensioning of weld, screw, key, pressure and shrink joints; the description of shafts, bearing and belt transmissions is also important. The calculation principles for fatigue are also emphasized.
Teaching and Learning Methods
Lectures, supervision and exercises.
Assessment Methods
Final written examination (100%).
The 12 exercises are obligatory. 5 exercises will be drawn out. 4 of these 5 exercises must be approved in order for the student to be permitted to take the final examination.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
