Learning outcome
After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.
Knowledge
The candidate has knowledge of:
- Planning trips according to ability
- Kayaking in groups, safety procedures and guidelines
- Equipment and its proper use when kayaking and during rescue
- Coast nature and culture
- Weather, wind, currents, and drift with relevance for kayaking inshore
- The history of kayaking
Skills
The candidate can demonstrate and explain:
- Techniques: paddling forward, sweep stroke, low bracing, steering strokes, bow strokes, sculling for support, capsizing
- Rescue techniques, self-rescue in a loaded kayak and rescuing members of your group
- The use of maps and a compass under normal conditions inshore
- How to pack a kayak for an overnight trip
- How to fish from a kayak using simple equipment
General competence
The candidate can/has:
- Analyse and ensure their own safety and that of the group at sea up to 3 star level*, with a view to creating a safe learning space
- The skills to plan and execute trips and courses up to 2 star level*
- An understanding of didactics and methodology related to the training of beginners in sea kayaking
- The competence to communicate safe trip guidelines, procedures, organization and working methods to beginners
- The ability to teach nature and culture topics related to the coast
Course Description
- Trip planning: where to plan the trip, devising an A-plan, B-plan and emergency plan
- Risks, equipment etc.
- Safety, responsibility and consequence analysis when sea kayaking
- Trip guidelines, procedures, organization and working methods
- Packing your sea kayak for overnight trips
- Shelter and camping on the coast
- Techniques: paddling techniques and rescue techniques at 2-3 star level* with fully loaded kayak
- Group dynamics: different roles and distribution of roles within the group
- Navigation: using a map and compass in a kayak
- Seamanship: skills and practice of good seamanship
- Coastal outdoors, leaving no trace, management of the coastal zone
- Guidance and instruction, planning and implementation of educational programs

Teaching and Learning Methods
- 3 lectures
- 7 days with a supervisor
- 6 days of individual trips
Assessment Methods
100% compulsory participation in practical activities is required. The practical component counts for 60% of the course grade; the written assignment counts for 40% of the course grade. The course grade is awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail.
Assessment methods are chosen to assess the candidate's knowledge, skills and competence in relation to communicating the subject; please refer to the learning outcomes above.
In level and content, the course is comparable to the Norwegian Canoe Association's basic, foundation, and techniques courses.
