Learning outcome

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The candidate has knowledge of:

  • Outdoor guiding, guiding and leadership
  • Knowledge and learning concepts
  • Teaching principles aimed at various groups
  • Group dynamics and group psychology
  • Theories related to motivation and mastery skills
  • Risk management in the planning and implementation of courses and teaching
  • Outdoor life within health and rehabilitation
  • Outdoor life in the upper secondary school and higher education

Skills

The candidate can:

  • Explain fundamental ideas within outdoor life pedagogy in Norway and other countries
  • Use various teaching and learning methods when planning and implementing outdoor activities
  • Give an account of various theories of learning
  • Give an account of various theories related to group dynamics and group psychology
  • Give an account of theory related to guidance, guiding and management

General competence

The candidate can:

  • Analyse and evaluate their own and others pedagogical programs
  • Plan, implement and evaluate pedagogical programs for various groups
  • Demonstrate an awareness of didactics and methodology related to training and adapted to groups at various levels
  • Communicate outdoor life in various pedagogical contexts
  • Teach outdoor life with a particular focus on upper secondary school and higher education
  • Guide groups within the travel industry

Course Description

  • Guidance, guiding and leadership
  • Group dynamics and group psychology
  • Advanced knowledge of didactic and methodological topics related to outdoor life teaching
  • Situation-related leadership, communication
  • Outdoor life as a teaching and learning method in various institutions such as secondary school, folk high school, college and university, and within the areas of rehabilitation and tourism
  • Planning, implementation and evaluation of pedagogical programs with various groups
  • Further insight into trip guidelines, basic procedures and safety issues

Teaching and Learning Methods

  • 16 lectures
  • 3 days of seminars and two days of practical training seminars
  • 10 days practical training

Assessment Methods

The oral examination counts for 100% of the course grade. The completion of practical training and participation in seminars is mandatory. The course grade is awarded on a descending scale using letter grades from A to E for passes and F for fail.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
