Learning outcome
Knowledge
- Be able to use knowledge about Norwegian language in oral and written situations, and in connection with various topics.
Skills
Listening
- Be able to understand extended speech and lectures and follow even complex lines of argument provided the topic is reasonably familiar.
- Be able to understand most TV news and current affairs programs
- Be able to understand the majority of films in standard dialect.
Reading
- Be able to read articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt particular attitudes or viewpoints. Be able to understand contemporary literary prose.
Speaking
- Be able to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible.
- Be able to take an active part in discussion in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining ones views.
Writing
- Be able to write clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects.
- Be able to write an essay or report, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view. Be able to write letters highlighting the personal significance of events and experiences.
Competence
- Be able to understand the main content in oral and written texts about various topics.
- Be able to participate in conversation with native speakers with a fairly and spontaneous and fluent language.
- Be able to write texts about a wide range of topics, explain views and opinions about current news, and argue for and against different alternatives.
- Knowledge of Norwegian history and society.
Course Description
This course is highly recommended for students who desire to reinforce and develop their intermediate language skills in Norwegian, and who wish to gain a deeper understanding of Norwegian culture in the past and present. In addition to a variety of classroom activities, students will be given the opportunity to engage actively in the local community.
Teaching and Learning Methods
4 hrs/week, fall or semester (course is offered on a rotational basis)
Lectures, discussion, essay writing, reading and discussing literature and newspaper articles, group work, impromptu-presentations, individual study, laboratory exercises. Norwegian is the course language. Attendance is mandatory.
Assessment Methods
- Oral and written exams (semester tests), count for 50 % of final grade
- Final written/oral exam, 3 hours, counts for 50% of final grade.
- Portfolio including weekly mandatory homework assignments (pass/fail)
All the assessed elements must receive passing marks in order to receive a passing grade for the course.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
