Hydrology and Groundwater 4216

Learning outcome

After completing the course, the students should have the following qualifications regarding knowledge, skills, and general competence:

Familiarity about the physical properties of water, the water cycle, and the watershed as a natural unit for water management
Ability to calculate water balances
Knowledge about important challenges in urban hydrology
Knowledge about of central hydrological field methods and related calculations
Knowledge about aquifers in solid bedrock and loos deposits
Knowledge about Darcy' law and flow in porous media
Ability to calculate ground water discharge and flow velocity
Basic knowledge about soil water
Be an operative hydrogeologist in field, know how to start up a project, apply the field surveys, do calculations, and write reports
Knowledge of processes for ground water quality
Knowledge of sources for ground water contamination, how the ground water quality reduces by contamination, and how contamination should be managed to avoid reducing of the ground water quality

Course Description

Ground water in bedrock and Quaternary deposits, interaction between soil water, ground water, and surface water
Ground water as a drinking water resource
Ground water flow and introduction to mathematical ground water modelling
Management of ground water resources
Field and calculation methods in hydrogeology
Ground water chemistry

Natural groundwater quality problems

Groundwater pollution

Introduction to EU's ground water directive
Field school

Teaching and Learning Methods

The teaching will be talks, exercsies, and group work. Field school (mandatory) over 5 days and a one day trip. The field school includes field work, report wrting, and an oral presentation of the results.

For Norwegian students the costs for field activities are around kr. 250 pr. student.

Assessment Methods

The marks will be based on a 4-hour, individual, written final exam. Approved field report is required to pass the course.
