Learning outcome

Through the bachelor project the student should gain working experience and specialization in a chosen topic. The assignment may be performed in its entirety at TUC or, preferably, in collaboration with a relevant external partner. Within the chosen theme, after completion of the module the student should have the following learning outcomes in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

• Good knowledge of relevant literature and theory

• Experience with relevant methods, procedures and use of appropriate instruments and equipment

• Be able to process data and present results orally and in writing

• Be able to critically analyze various information sources and apply these to formulate scientific reasoning

• Be able to carry out an independent limited project under supervision and in accordance with current working methods and protocols

• Be able to communicate independent work orally and in writing, and handle the terminology of the subject area.

Course Description

The thesis must be linked to a subject that is relevant to the study programs "Pollution and environment" and / or "Ecology and Nature Management» . The subject of the assignment will be determined in consultation with the supervisor(s). Students who have an external supervisor must also have an internal supervisor. The internal supervisor is responsible for ensuring that the that printed dissertation conforms to the colleges guidelines and that research ethical norms and rules are followed.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The project may be done individually or by two students working together. Information concerning possible relevant topics and any available external opportunities during the 4th semester and at the beginning of the 5th semester. For students who want a project that involves summer fieldwork, the task should be chosen in the 4th semester so that fieldwork can be done in between the 4th and 5th semesters. Otherwise, the project should be done during the 5th and 6th semesters, or entirely in the 6th semester. A joint introductory seminar will be held in October. To ensure satisfactory progress and status report for the project must be delivered by March 15. Deadline for delivery of the thesis is May 15th; the oral exam at the will be 14 days after submission at the earliest.

Students wishing to take this course must submit an application form by September 15 in the 5th semester. For those who choose task with field activities in the summer before the 5th semester starts, the application must be submitted by 15 April in the 4th semester. The form is available from the the Institute consultant or the course coordinator, or from Fronter. Students suggest appropriate supervisor (s) in the application, but it is not required. Students will be informed of the result of their application and, if the application is granted, will be assigned supervisor if this has not been clarified in advance. The application works as a contract when it is signed by the supervisor (s) and student. Deadline for signing of the contract is 1 October (May 1st for those submitting an application on 15 April in the 4th semester). If there are more students who want to take this module than the department has the capacity to supervise, students will be prioritized based on the number of credits and grades.

Assessment Methods

The bachelor project will result in a written report which must be presented and defended orally. In addition, practical work related to the task should also be approved by the supervisor (s). Final grade will be based primarily on the written report and adjusted on the basis of the oral defence. The thesis will evaluated by an appointed examiner with relevant expertise.
