Learning outcome

Upon completion of the course the student should

• be able to use English in a correct and idiomatic manner, both orally and in writing
• be able to reflect on the relationship between linguistic expressions and linguistic content, including how specific grammatical constructions and word choice affect the message one is trying to send
• utilize grammatical knowledge to explain common errors and to correct and improve texts
• acquire good fluency and pronunciation to express him/herself accurately

Course Description

The course examines various aspects of English usage. The written component will focus on sentence style, vocabulary, sentence structure, and the most common grammatical mistakes. The spoken component of the course will cover problematic aspects of the student’s pronunciation in addition to presentation skills.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The course comprises two hours of instruction per week. The course is organised to encourage active student participation and the training in practical skills through textual analysis, editing exercises, and oral presentations.

Assessment Methods

• Oral exam,counts 40% (graded mark)
• Written exam, 1.5 hours, counts 60% (graded mark)
• Work requirement, at least 75% attendance (required for the student to be allowed to take the exam)

All parts must be passed.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
