Learning outcome
After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge
The candidate is able to:
- Explain various theories and perspectives on leadership
- Give an account of leadership theories as justification for the choice of leadership focus
- Justify choices that promote children’s education in theory and research
- Give an account of management systems and forms in knowledge-based organisations
- Explain the laws and regulations in relation to the Education Act
Skills
The candidate can:
- Use current leadership theories in knowledge-based organisations
- Reflect critically in relation to leadership, influence and power
- Assess the relationship between leadership and quality in education
- Apply knowledge of leadership and ethics
- Carry out supervision from a leadership perspective
General competence
The candidate can:
- Analyse critically the relationship between leadership, influence and gender roles
- Lead and manage change within knowledge-based organisations
Course Description
The course focuses on leadership in relation to how power and influence over other people is exercised, and the actions that individuals, groups and organisations adopt to achieve common goals. Leadership can be exercised both formally and informally. The course places a special emphasis on providing students with skills that will enable them to exercise formal leadership as rector, supervisor, teacher, educational leader or head of training in an organisation. Knowledge of management, organisational development and leadership forms are important elements that can help to develop conscientious leaders for educational entities. Ethics is also an important area of expertise within the area of leadership, which has come into focus in relation to globalisation with the increased interaction between different cultures and beliefs.
Teaching and Learning Methods
Lectures, seminars, group work.
Assessment Methods
Submission of one assignment (the draft of an academic article) which will be evaluated as approved/not approved. This must be approved before the student will be permitted to take the final examination.
Final examination:
Submission of an academic article, graded mark, which counts for 100% of the course grade.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
