Learning outcome
After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.
Knowledge
The candidate has knowledge of:
- Motivation, learning and challenges in the teaching of different groups of pupils in primary education
- Children and adolescent’s mental, physical and motor development and learning in different social, linguistic, religious and cultural contexts, including the indigenous Sami
- The school as an organization, framework conditions and administrative structure

The class leader’s role and responsibilities in relation to collaboration with colleagues, students, parents and external agencies
Skills
The candidate can:
- Organise pupils’ motivation, learning and development based on knowledge of pupil relationships, communication and interaction
- Develop pupils’ five basic skills
- Give a reasoned assessment of the pupils’ attainments with and without grades, and use assessment as a tool for learning
General competence
The candidatecan:
- Critically analyse relevant research concerning development and learning
- Collaborate with parents, colleagues and others in the development of their own teaching and the school’s operation
Course Description
The course is designed to provide students with insight into a teacher’s scope of action and responsibility for organising teaching of a diverse pupil body. The school and teacher’s organizational framework will be clearly defined as well as subject matter that deals with, among other things, classroom management, motivation, culture, learning and development. Didactics will be presented as a tool in planning, implementing and evaluating good teaching and assessment practices

The course includes the following teaching and learning methods:
- Lectures
- Class and study groups
- Supervision and assessment
- Visual forms of presentation and teaching
- Work related to practical training

Seminars
Compulsory attendance
Parts of the course require compulsory attendance (see the semester plan). Regarding compulsory attendance in the study program the Faculty of Art, Folk Culture and Teacher Education (EFL) guidelines will apply; this should be considered in relation to rights and obligations of the student as stipulated in Telemark University College’s Examination Regulations, and in relation to the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges § 40 and § 46.3.
Assessment Methods
Coursework requirements:
Individual written assignment of up to 1,200 words, which must be approved before students will be permitted to take the examination
Examination:
Oral examination, 20 minutes, which counts 100 %
A final grade is entered on the diploma, graded from A to F, where A is the best and E the lowest passing grade. Please refer to Telemark University College’s examination regulations for further information.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
