Learning outcome

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The candidate has knowledge of:

  • Communication processes and how language can be used as a tool in relation to context, goals and the recipient.
  • The importance of cultural elements in communication processes.
  • The geodetic basis for altitude and coordinates of points in the terrain.
  • Measurement and calculation methods of surveying.
  • The relevant laws, regulations and standards applicable to the land surveying profession.

Skills

The candidate can:

  • Define communication goals and choose the appropriate level and form of what is to be communicated in relation to the recipient and the context.
  • Structure their own texts and use relevant tools for the form and cohesion of texts.
  • Express themselves in writing formally and correctly in Norwegian in various functional texts that are appropriate for an engineer.
  • Use surveying instruments for making simple measurements of points in the terrain.
  • Perform surveying calculations by hand (with calculator).

General competence

The candidate can:

  • Formulate clear, targeted and user-friendly reports, exercises and project documents.
  • Communicate effectively in groups.
  • Plan and conduct meetings and discussions.
  • Obtain information from various sources, use them critically in their own work, and cite sources.
  • Evaluate the quality of the collected survey data.

Course Description

The aim of the course is to develop students’ ability to communicate well, orally and in writing, with professionals in various professional fields, cultures and at all levels.

The main topics are data collection and collaboration, language and communication processes, and written presentations, focusing on technical reports and business correspondence with an emphasis on formality, ethics, style and analysis of target groups. Training in oral presentations is an important part of the course.

The part of the course focusing on surveying may be summarized as follows:

  • The geodetic basis.
  • Methods and calculation of altitudes and coordinates.
  • Use of appropriate standards for control of collected data.

Teaching and Learning Methods

  • Lectures
  • Exercises in groups and individually in the classroom and laboratory

Assessment Methods

  • Group assessment

Written group report in Norwegian which will be assessed for language and content equally.

Grade

  • Graded scale from A to E for pass, and F for fail.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
