Mathematics for Computer Science 5501

Course Objectives

The course will provide students with a foundation for logical and methodical thinking and work. The students will gain insight into, and practical training with, basic mathematical topics that are relevant for computer studies.

Course Description

The course provides students with a foundation in mathematical analysis and probability calculation. It will focus on various systems of notation, machine internal storage and arithmetic. Set theory and logic. Numerical sequences and differential equations. Functions of single variables including the derivation, integration and optimisation of polynomial, exponential and logarithmic functions. In probability calculations, there will be a focus on discrete probability models, results, combinatorics and selection, conditional probability and independence.

Learning Methods

6-8 hours of lectures per week in the autumn semester.

Assessment Methods

Portfolio assessment with a 1-hour written, individual mid-term examination, and a 4-hour written, individual final examination. The mid-term examination counts for 20% and the final examination counts for 80% of the final grade.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
