Course Objectives

The course will provide students with a theoretical and practical introduction to the technical, practical and organisational aspects of computing. They will also learn how to use computing equipment. The course will also focus on information technology and society. After completing the course, the participants will be able to use the computer as a tool in the practical solution of problems.

Course Description

Data, information and information-systems, software and operative systems, the construction and mode of operation of computers, the structure of computer networks, computer security and personal privacy, an elementary introduction to the use of Internet, how to build models in spreadsheets, a short introduction to the use of presentation programmes, the programming of spreadsheets and the use of database programmes.

Learning Methods

6-7 hours of lectures/exercises/guidance per week during the spring semester. The course will, to a great extent be organised as e-learning through the use of Classfronter, a web-based data system.

Assessment Methods

An individual 2-hour, mid-term examination counts for 40 % of the grade, 1 - 3 obligatory group-based submitted assignments. A 3-hour individual final written examination counts for 60 % of the final grade. Students must receive passing grades on all of the assessments.
