Vegetation Ecology 4206

Course Objectives

The course will increase the students’ knowledge of plant species and provide knowledge of the main features of vegetation and flora in Norway. An important aim of the course is to provide the students with a theoretical and practical foundation for managing nature, so that species diversity may be preserved. Emphasis is placed on providing students with a foundation for understanding the relationship between the distribution of plant species and environmental conditions, and how one may utilise plants and vegetation as indicators for various environmental conditions.

  • Further knowledge on floristics and systematics
  • Main characteristics of Norwegian plant geography, vegetation zones and vegetation sections
  • Main characteristics of Norwegian vegetation
  • Autoecology and plant physiology
  • Adaptation of plant species to various environmental conditions
  • Factor numbers

Learning Methods

25 hours of lectures in the autumn semester
Obligatory: 15 hours laboratory course in classifying plants and a 7-day field trip.
In addition to the lectures emphasis is placed on teaching in the field and laboratory followed up by report writing and presentation in groups.

Assessment Methods

Grades will be given for three parts: the group project paper counts for 20%, the species test counts for 30% and the final examination (4 hours) counts for 50% of the final grade.
In order to take the final examination, both the laboratory and field reports must first be approved. All three part-exams must also have received pass marks.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
