1206 Outdoor Life, Culture and Society I

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with an understanding of outdoor life in Norway in a historical, cultural and social context.

Course Description

- Outdoor life as a cultural phenomenon, the variety of outdoor activities
- The history of outdoor activities, growth and development
- Outdoor activities as tools in building the nation and creating national identity
- Outdoor life in relation to gender, class and social divisions
- The significance of outdoor life in Norwegian society: values, motives and goals
- The changing aspect of outdoor life: Institutionalisation, commercialisation, pedagogisation
- Experiencing nature and views of nature, outdoor life and environmental conservation

Learning Methods

Instruction is given during the autumn and spring semesters. The course includes lectures, independent study, seminars and group projects. Assignments will be distributed during the lectures.

Assessment Methods

Four-hour graded individual written examination.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
