Course Objectives

The purpose of the course is to apply a subject perspective, and use theory from the introductory course, to examine a particular area. In each specialisation course students will study a general interdisciplinary theme, from a historical, an aesthetic (e.g. literary) or interpretative sociological perspective. Teachers from various disciplines will present interdisciplinary topics from their respective standpoints, and in this way emphasise the interdisciplinary approach.

Course Description

The seminars will present the various theories and models for management of cultural institutions from historical and contemporary perspectives. Sociological and cultural analytical theory about organisation and leadership will also be presented, and the relevance of these theories for activities in the cultural sector will be discussed. The seminars will also highlight the differences and similarities between artistic and economic-administrative ways of thinking and discourses. In addition, seminar discussions will be related to the various types of cultural activities, both small temporary projects and large permanent institutions.

The following topics will be discussed:

• General theories about the organisation and leadership of cultural activities
• Theories about artistic, administrative and economic ideologies and discourses
• Marketing of cultural activities
• Financial and human resources management
• The relationship between cultural activities, the authorities, and the market

Learning Methods

The course will consist of seminars, between 3-6 hours per week in the spring semester.

Assessment Methods

Students will be required to submit a term paper that is based on the course material, which will represent 20% of the final grade. For specialisation courses, students will be required to present a 40-45 minute trial lecture for one of the courses, and an oral examination for the other course. The trial lecture and oral examination will represent 80% of the final grade.

Students may select the specialisation course of their choice for the trial lecture; however, the department will select the term paper question. During course registration, students will be required to notify the department about which type of assessment they prefer.
