3503 Elective in World History

Course Objectives

This course will provide students with more comprehensive knowledge in two electives, one taken from the period of history before 1750 and one from the period of history after 1750. The required syllabus for each course consists of roughly 350 pages. The course provides an interpretative and deeper understanding of history in comparison to the Overview of World History.

Course Description

Students will be required to choose two electives, one taken from the period of history before 1750 and one from the period of history after 1750. Information will be provided in the semester plan about which courses will be taught each semester. The following list provides examples of courses which have been offered before, and which may be offered again:

- Society and politics in Rome
- Roman imperialism
- The slave trade and slavery
- The outbreak of the First World War
- The Soviet Union after 1917

Learning Methods

The course will mainly consist of seminars and a view lectures.

Instruction is normally provided in several courses. The instruction in one or more of the courses can be made compulsory. Students who do not attend the teaching may limit their choice of courses; it is also possible they will be instructed to take certain courses and submit assignments etc., see the semester plan for history.

Assessment Methods

Students will be required to write a take-home assignment in the beginning of November. Students will have one week to work on the assignment. The assignment will be given by the subject teacher and will be closely related to the content of the course seminars and lectures. At least one third of the students will be given a supplementary oral examination. A total grade is given for the whole part of the programme of study. Students who do not take an oral exam will have their grade determined based on an assessment of their home assignment.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
