MA5006 Finite Element Method - FEM

Course Objectives

The course will provide students with an understanding of advanced dimensioning and strength calculation. At the end of the course, students will:

* understand the relationship between load, stress and deformation,

* understand multiaxial stress states in a construction element and simple constructions,

* be able to analyse and evaluate stress states in a construction element and simple constructions,

* be able to dimension construction elements and simple constructions

Furthermore, the course will provide students with practical exercises and experience in software-based (COSMOSWorks) strength calculation, using FEM.

Course Description

Introduction to FEM and FEM terminology. Partition of structure into elements, describing element properties and then system properties. Definition of stiffness matrices, definition of stress and stretch, determination of load situation and boundary conditions. Solving sets of equations through matrix calculation and evaluation of results. Criteria for dimensioning of machine parts and construction according to Standards Norway NS 3472. FEM will be approached through manual, analytical exercises, as well as through computer-based exercises.

Learning Methods

Lectures, obligatory manual and PC exercises and self study.

Assessment Methods

Grades in the course are based on assessment of two parts, each weighted 50%.

Part 1: completion of computer-based exercises (projects) (continuous evaluation).

Part 2: written examination (final evaluation).

In order to sit the written exam, students must complete no less than 80% of the obligatory exercises, subject to approval.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
