2301 Spanish Language and Culture I
Course Objectives
The purpose of the course is to introduce students to Spanish language and culture. Students will develop proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing Spanish. Exercises will focus on proper grammar usage and translating from Norwegian to Spanish, and Spanish to Norwegian. An introduction to the history and culture of Spanish speaking countries will be provided.
Course Description
The course will provide an introduction to Spanish language through the use of exercises that focus on proper usage of grammar and syntax. In addition, the course will provide an overview of history, literature and culture in the Spanish-speaking countries.
Learning Methods
The course will consist of lectures and seminars (8 hours per week)
Instruction will mainly be provided in Spanish. Lectures will focus on developing student’s proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing Spanish through the use of grammar and translation exercises. Students will be required to actively participate so their proficiency in Spanish language can be evaluated.
Assessment Methods
The examination will consist of 2 parts:
1) A 3-hour written examination, which will represent 50% of the final grade.
2) An oral examination of up to 40 minutes duration, which will represent 50% of the final grade. The oral examination will consist of two parts: firstly, a discussion in Spanish of a topic, which has been covered in the course, and secondly, reading aloud Spanish texts followed by a discussion of the texts.
Students must receive passing grades in both the written and oral examinations in order to achieve a final passing grade for the course. The examinations will be graded according to the A-F grading system.
Examination aids will be allowed in the written examination: a monolingual Spanish dictionary, which does not include information on Spanish grammar and conjugation; for example, either Diccionario Larousse del Español Moderno or Larousse Diccionario Práctico Español Moderno.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
