Chemistry and the Environment FB3006

Course Objectives

To acquire a basic understanding of chemistry and the environment, and an appreciation of the causes and effects of those processes which result in environmental problems. The student will learn strategies to avoid or reduce environmental problems.

Course Description

The structure of atoms and the periodic table, chemical binding, chemical equations and calculations, chemical names, solutions, chemical equilibrium; weight, acids and bases, oxidation and reduction, electro-chemistry and organic chemistry.

General ecology, air-pollution/purification of emissions to the atmosphere, water pollution/purification and discharges to water, refuse and its treatment, energy and the environment, working environments.

Learning Methods

Lectures and practical assignments.

Assessment Methods

One small examination counting for 20%, and a final examination counting for 80% of the final grade.

Both examinations are written. The small exam is in the middle of the semester. The final examination is in December.
In order to pass the course, the student must pass the final exam.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
