Course Objectives

• to improve the student’s ability to express him/herself verbally and in writing
• to prepare the student for an active student-role
• to make the student more fully aware and develop his or her professional identity as a cultural worker and director
• to provide insight and experience in group-dynamics and communication processes to improve one’s capacity for cooperation and communication in subsequent work-situations
• through active reflection, to make the student more aware of his or her own actions and choices, role in a group, body language and communication techniques

Course Description

The course is divided into 4 elements:

Element 1. Group dynamics and communication
General communication theory and making the students more aware of communication processes through reflection in association with practical exercises. The students will gain better insight with respect to verbal and non-verbal communication. Through games, exercises and the analysis of group dynamics, they will reflect over processes and their own roles in the group
Element 2. Language and texts
Creative writing and job-related texts. Through working on various texts, the students will gain understanding and knowledge of how different styles and formats can be used in formal and informal situations (for example projects, applications, reports, essays). Students will become more aware of what they need to work on in order to improve their ability to express themselves in writing.

Element 3. Scenic preparation
Presentation and speech. The students will enhance their ability to express themselves verbally through the presentation of their own work. Through practical exercises, the students will gain insight into body language and the use of their voices, and strengthen their ability to communicate from the stage.

Element 4. Project
The students will acquire practical experience with the directors’ role through group-work with cultural productions in association with concrete (fictive) projects. In the project period, experiences gained during the earlier partial-course will be activated through practical exercises: cooperative exercises in groups and in communication, writing job-related texts, searching for information and making oral presentations in groups.

Learning Methods

• lectures on various topics
• seminars with practical exercises in group-dynamics and communication, written exercises and practice in verbal presentation
• active independent work with a log-book and a diary to record personal reflections
• obligatory written submissions and verbal presentations, in groups and individually
• guidance of both individuals and groups

Mandatory attendance; at least 80% participation in classes. If the student absent from more than 20% of the instruction periods, the course will not be approved regardless of the cause.

Assessment Methods

Element 1 will be evaluated in terms of pass/fail. A minimum of 80% participation is mandatory.
Element 2 will be evaluated in terms of pass/fail, based on two submitted written texts.

Element 3 will be evaluated in terms of pass/fail, on the basis of individual oral presentations.

Element 4 will be evaluated in terms of pass/fail, on the basis of written exercises and oral presentations in a group.

For the entire course, a minimum of 80% participation is required in order to have the course approved. The final report will be given a pass/fail grade.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
