Course Objectives
The purpose of this course is to teach students about Norwegian art history, and theories related to the dissemination, promotion and exhibition of art, as well as the technical aspects of exhibitions.
Course Description
The first part of the course focuses on theories concerning the promotion and dissemination of art, exhibition theory, and gallery theory. Students will learn about the technical aspects of exhibitions, exhibition architecture and exhibition design for travelling exhibitions. They will also gain knowledge concerning the history of exhibitions, both Norwegian and international. The topics that will be focused on are: exhibition policy and the market, art associations’ exhibition policy and the role of the curator in the Norwegian art world today. Museum theory and museum history will be discussed, as well as new trends in art museums’ exhibition policies.
Learning Methods
The course consists of three workshops, lectures, seminars and study trips. Required home assignments have to be finished before the work- shops. Reports from the study trips and work experience. Communication and publishing using the web-based datasystem Classfronter. Participation in executing an exhibition in a gallery during work experience. Students must also prepare texts to present an overview over programmes, press releases, catalogue prefaces and orientation to schools and the like.
Assessment Methods
Students will be required to submit completed home assignments before the study sessions and also submit study trip reports.
First and second course unit: Required home assignments are graded according to the pass/fail grading system.
Third courseunit: Students will be required to submit an individual home assignment will which will be graded according to the A-F grading system. The grade on the individual home assignment will represent 100% of the final grade for the course. Students must achieve passing grades on all parts of the assessment in order to earn a passing grade for the course.
