Course Objectives

The course will familiarise students with the basic functions of modern computer networks. They will acquire the ability to establish and run simple local networks, as well as establish servers for various services on the Internet.

Course Description

The hardware in local networks, the design of local networks, topology. Communication with peripheral equipment (modem communication, ISDN, ADSL) and hand-held units, etc. Services on local networks and remote networks/Internet, client-server systems. Network monitoring systems, with an emphasis on security, logging-in and reporting. Practical exercises in the use, organisation and operation of PC-based local networks. The OSI model and TCP/IP protocols. Introduction to Linux. .

Learning Methods

6-8 hours of lectures/exercises per week during the spring semester.

Assessment Methods

Two 1-hour, individual written mid-term examinations, and an individual, written 3-hour final examination. The mid-term examinations count for 40% of the final grade, and the final examination counts for 60%. Obligatory assignments submitted during the course must be approved before the student may be permitted to sit the final examination. All parts of the assessment must receive passing marks.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
