Course Objectives

The students will acquire an understanding of the fundaments of the use, development and administration of database systems with a focus on data-oriented systems development, relational databases and SQL. The students will also gain experience in the use of database system tools.

Course Description

Uses of database systems. SQL and relational models. Data oriented systems development (data modelling) with ER, creating ER models as relational databases and normalisation theories. Introduction to physical storage structures and indexes. Development of elementary database applications. Database administration with an emphasis on administration of users. System architecture and important functions in a data-management system. Introduction to object-oriented database systems and web databases.

Learning Methods

6 hours of lectures, exercises and guidance per week in the autumn semester.

Assessment Methods

Two 1-hour individual, written mid-term examinations and an individual, written 3-hour final examination. The mid-term examinations count for 40% of the final grade, and the final examination counts for 60 % of the final grade. All parts of the assessment must receive passing marks.
