Course Objectives

The students will, through the theoretical syllabus and practical exercises, become familiar with how Internet is built up, how it functions and its potential uses. The students will acquire the competence necessary for making active information contributions on Internet, with particular emphasis on the worldwide web, and develop a critical attitude to how the net is used.

Course Description

The structure and mode of operation of the Internet. Basic Internet applications such as e-mail and web, searching for information, file-transfers, discussion groups (news-groups) and remote in-logging. The HTML-standard and other document formats relevant to the web. The development of static and dynamic web documents with client and server-page document processing (style-rules and scripting languages). Web documents with links to databases. Security on Internet with, for example, encrypting. E-trade. Practical exercises in the use of Internet and the development of web documents.

Learning Methods

Around 6-7 hours of lectures/practice sessions per week in the spring semester.

Assessment Methods

Two one-hour individual, written mid-term examinations and an individual written 3-hour final examination. The mid-term examinations count for 40% of the final grade, and the final examination counts for 60%. In addition, students will be given obligatory assignments. The submitted assignments must be approved before the student will be permitted to sit the final examination. Students must receive passing grades on all of the assessments.
