Discourse and Dialogue 2401

Course Objectives

The students will gain insight into fundamental discourse-analytical approaches. They will learn to discuss the role of language in interactions, identity formation and interpretations of reality.

They will be able to explain genres, argumentation and speech acts, and be able to analyse dialogues.

Course Description

The course deals with how communication and culture interact. With emphasis on communication as a form of interaction, we discuss self-understanding, self-image and roles, power and values, and questions regarding truth.

Learning Methods

Lectures and seminars 3 hrs. per week for 15 weeks. You must attend at least 60% of the class and group meetings, and take part in the obligatory guidance sessions during the writing process.

Assessment Methods

Together with the instructor, the students will chose a reading list of approximately 1500 pages, and write a 6-page semester assignment (around 2500 words). The assignment will document insight into basic discourse-analytical approaches and demonstrate a satisfactory understanding of analysis and discussion.
