Course Objectives

The course will provide a basic understanding of the North/South situation and elementary foreign development topics.

Course Description

The course will provide a basic introduction to the interaction between global relationships and local societies and cultures. We will study the global flow of ideas and cultures. In a professional social perspective, we will emphasise globalisation and topics such as the causes of poverty and inequality, weak economic growth and political development in the South.

The course has an interdisciplinary platform and incorporates theories and approaches from fields such as social anthropology, political science, social economics and pedagogy. The course will give the students a basis for problematisizing causes, carrying out critical analyses and making reflective evaluations of today’s globalised society. The students will also gain an insight into the effects of globalisation on international efforts and commerce.

Learning Methods

The teaching includes lectures, seminars and the submission of an assignment. The assignment should consist of between 2000-2800 words and must be approved by the course teacher before the candidate may be allowed to sit the final examination. There will be student excursions in and around Cape Town. Students are expected to make considerable efforts and actively participate in the teaching.

Assessment Methods

The obligatory submission must receive passing marks before the candidate make take the final examination. The submission counts for 40% of the final grade. The final 4-hour examination counts for 60% of the final grade. Lettered grades A to F will be given, where E is the lowest passing grade.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
