Mediation of Visual Art 3323
Course Objectives
The course provides with knowledge and insight into European and Norwegian art history, and into conditions and challenges concerning the promotion of visual expression, particularly European and Norwegian contemporary art. This course is relevant for students who plan to work wtih art management and curating art in Norway.
Course Description
- Principal institutions and organisations in the Norwegian art world. Public administrative guidelines.
- Mediation of the arts (arenas and instruments): Museums/exhibitions. Site-spesific art. Mediation of the arts using various media. Challenges in the field of mediation and facilitation of the arts.
- Ways of seeing, experiencing and interpreting art: Trends and themes in contemporary art. Various ways of approaching art.
Learning Methods
Lectures in two weekly sessions together with students attending 3324 Curating. Presentation of written work for approval and oral exercises. Between these sessions there will be held lectures, seminars and study trips. The students will administrate, promote and mediate at least one art exhibition during the course.
There is a minimum of 80% attendance requirement for the seminar/exhibition projects which has its own timetable. If students are absent for more than 20% of the meetings/work, they will be orally examined on the course curriculum texts. Attendance on all joint study trips is obligatory for all students. Students who do not participate, will have to write a report on the subject material of the study trip. Students are not required to attend all lectures, but regular attendance is recommended.
Assessment Methods
Obligatory written paper which counts for 40% of the final grade. Written individual 5-hour examination which counts for 60%. Graded marks. Students must receive passing marks in both the paper and the final examination in order to achieve a final passing mark for the course.
