Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course students will be able to:
- Suggest methods for, choose equipment and carry out a survey and establish reference points.
- Carry out calculations using relevant ICT tools.
- Identify sources of error and evaluate the quality of collected data.
- Comply with the requirements and norms for the profession, and appreciate the skills of others in the field.
Course Description
The course will provide a basic introduction to the use of modern surveying instruments and ICT tools. Topical themes include instrument theory, measuring, laying out, maps, GPS, error analysis and the SOSI standard.
The quantity of subject material covered, and the level of detail, will depend on the previous knowledge of the students. The syllabus may be therefore be modified.
Learning Methods
Lectures, instrument exercises and calculation and computer exercises.
The class will be divided into groups which will perform three mandatory instrument exercises.
ICT is used extensively, and students are expected to make extensive use of their laptop computers. Computers may also be used in the final examination.
Assessment Methods
The grade on the final examination will count as the course grade. The instrument exercises are obligatory, and must be approved, but will not count towards the course grade.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
