Target Group and Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet general admission requirements in order to take this study programme . The target group includes all applicants who are interested in acquiring a solid basic competence in English, for use in teaching or other areas that require a good understanding of the language.

Aim of the Programme

The study programme provides a broad introduction to British and American literature and culture, an understanding of how the language is used in other parts of the English-speaking world, and insight into English grammar, phonetics and the spoken language. The use of the subject in teaching and communication is also stressed. The one-year study programme provides teaching competence in English sufficient for teaching in lower and upper secondary schools.

Further Education opportunities

This independent study programme may be used as a part of a Bachelor’s degree study programme. It can provide a basis for advanced studies in English, and later as part of the background qualification for admission to a Master’s degree study programme in English. The study programme provides teaching competence sufficient for teaching English in lower and upper secondary schools.

Curriculum and structure

The study programme consists of six courses, each worth 10 ECTS credits. Three of these courses will be taken during the autumn semester, and the other three during the spring semester.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The teaching and learning methods include lectures, seminars, written and oral project work and submissions.

Telemark University College cooperates with other university colleges and universities in the Norwegian Study Centre at the University of York. Students taking the one-year study programme in English will have a two-week obligatory study trip to England. This is part of the instruction in practical language and in the study of British Literature and Culture. Students who are unable to travel may apply for exemption from participation, but will instead be given a two-week project assignment. The project assignment will be related to the course in British Literature and Culture, which will be carried out during the spring semester, and the project must be approved in order to receive a passing grade for the course.

The Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund, under certain circumstances, may grant a supplementary loan to cover some of the costs of the stay in England. The total costs (travel, living expenses, tuition) will probably be around NOK 6000.

Assessment Methods

All of the courses will have both continuous and final assessment. At the beginning of the study programme, students will be provided with details concerning the written and oral assessments.
