Target Group and Admission Requirements

The study programme provides a solid educational background from which to pursue positions in physical education, sports or outdoor activities in the public or private sectors.

For admission to the study programme, applicants must possess:

• A 3-year Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 60 ECTS credits in specialised courses in the subject areas of sports, outdoor activities or physical education. In addition, the student must possess at least 20 ECTS credits of social sciences or pedagogical courses.

The university college reserves the right to change the study programme.

Aim of the Programme

The study programme provides insight into scientific and methodical questions related to research in the subject area of physical education, sports and outdoor life, as well as knowledge of scientific theories and methodology. Students will acquire knowledge of the subject area which will allow them to carry out research, evaluate their own projects and those of others, and gain experience in working critically and independently with research problems.

Further Education opportunities

This is a two-year study programme which culminates in the award of a Master’s degree. In combination with a Teacher’s Education programme it will qualify students who complete the programme to work as a senior teacher.

Curriculum and structure

The social sciences approach to physical movement is an important aspect of the study programme. In addition, we will focus on the relationship between the various movement-related cultures and institutions in society. The programme is based on an understanding of sports, physical education and outdoor activities as constituting social structures which are shaped and determined by the individual, society and nature. Humanities, social sciences and natural science theories and perspectives are used to describe, explain and understand the complexity and diversity of the processes that give human motion form and content.

Each student chooses 2 specialised 15 ECTS courses. At least one of these must be from the department's portfolio. Which specialisation course are offered will depend on the number of students and extent of resources available.

Specialised courses from the Telemark University College’s Master’s programmes in Cultural Studies and Environmental Health may also be approved. Courses from Master’s degree programmes at other institutions will also be approved if they are relevant to students' studies. Plans are being implemented to enable student exchanges at the Master’s degree level.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Lectures, group-based projects and Master’s thesis. The student is entitled to a total of 50 hours of supervision over 2 years. The tutor will primarily provide advice on methods and the practical aspects of the student’s work. The student is responsible for planning, topic selection, preparation of the project, collection of material, and the writing and practical completion of the project.

Assessment Methods

The diploma will include the grades of all the Master’s programme courses. Passing marks are graded A-E.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
