Course Objectives

The course explores the relationship between body, health and movement. Through lectures and essay writing, students will acquire a deeper understanding of the relationship between body, health and movement. Furthermore, the course aims to stimulate inspiration and provide insight into issues related to an interdisciplinary and unifying perspective, where students will be challenged to explore body and movement in a holistic perspective. Students will also be encouraged to adopt an analytical and critical, reflective attitude to social and administrative structures.

Course Description

  • Historical, social and political perspectives on physical activity, recreation and health
  • The body as object - physiological and a social science perspective
  • The body as subject - phenomenological and psychological perspective
  • Administrative and pedagogical challenges related to the work with body, health and movement
  • Critical perspectives on the body, sports, management, policies, etc.

Learning Methods

The course is organised as a series of lectures over 10 weeks, which will be followed up by the writing of an essay.

Essay
Students will write an essay based on the lectures and the relevant literature in which they take up key issues related to the theme, body, health and movement. They will choose a topic, which must be approved by the teacher in advance of starting work on the essay. The essay should reflect the relationship between practice and theory; it should also be based on reflections, observations and / or discussions with people who work in the field, and who are able to provide insights on the use of physical activity and outdoor recreation from a health perspective.

Assessment Methods

Individual essay – lettered grade.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
