Learning outcome
After completing the course, students will:
- know important datacommunication- and network concepts, and be able to communicate these in writing and oral.
- have knowlegde about important standards, protocols and technologies used in modern computer networks.
- be able to use this knowledge in processes for evaluating and purchasing communication and network solutions
- be able to install and manage simple local area networks and services used in LAN and Internet.
- be able to install and manage a server with Windows Server and Active Directory.
- be able to upgrade his own knowledge according to technological developments regarding communication and networks.
Course Description
Communication standards, the OSI model and the TCP/IP protocols. Services in local area networks and wide area network and Internet. Media, protocols and network components in local area networks. Wireless networks, teleservices and technologies for Internet access. VLAN, VPN, NAT and firewalls. Encryption, digital certificates and PKI. Window Server, serverroles, domains, useradministration, diskadministration, access permissions, printeradministration, DHCP, DNS and Active Directory. Practical exercises will cover installation, configuration, use and management of Windows Server, Active Directory and Windows-clients in a "closed" lab-network, WiFi equipment and analysis of network traffic.
Assessment Methods
An individual, written 4-hour final examination. A number of obligatory assignments submitted during the course must be approved before the student may be permitted to sit the final examination.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
